Well Remediation
What Should I Do If There are Contaminants in My Well?
For Bacteriological Contaminants:
- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources recommends that if you receive a positive result for bacteriological contaminants, you should carefully retest your well, to be sure there's an issue.
- If this second test is positive, do not consume any of the water without first boiling at a rolling boil for at least one minute. Also search for contamination issues around your water source.
- If no obvious sources of contamination are found, you should have your well system inspected and disinfected by a Licensed Well Driller or Pump Installer. You can contact them by following this link provided by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Well and Heat Exchange Contractors
- It is also possible to disinfect a well yourself. For more information on this procedure and what is required, follow this link: Disinfection Procedure Guide
For Arsenic or Other Chemical Contaminants:
Boiling and disinfecting water do not remove chemical contaminants from water. The only way to remove chemical contaminants is by installing filtration systems.
-
Note that not all filtration systems will remove every potentially harmful chemical.
-
It is important to know which specific contaminant is present in your water before installing a filtration system and ensuring your water is safe for use.
