Village of Sheldon
Sheldon was first settled just east of the present village. The settlement, called Fern in the 1880’s, was supported by the lumbering industry: one of Fern’s Mills, cut lumber specifically for area settlers — not for export.
Present day Sheldon is busy with year-round activity. Starting in April, the Community Club organizes an annual canoe race, starting in Jump River and ending in Haley’s Park. At the finish line canoeists and spectators are invited to share in food, drink, and games.
Haley Park, is noted for the variety of its trees and wildflowers. The park has excellent access facilities for the canoeist, it comes complete with toilets, picnic tables, and a covered shelter.
The fairgounds in town feature two well maintained ball diamonds, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, a horse arena, a restored Soo Line depot and fair building. As the snow arrives snowmobilers start grooming the Sheldon Rough Rider Snowmobile Club trails, a 35 mile system stretching from the Village of Tony to Chippewa County.
Fisherman will find the clean, clear Jump River brimming with small mouth bass, muskies, northerns, walleyes, and catfish. Nearby, abundant wildlife can be seen all around. Rich farmland and successful dairy crop operations add to the Sheldon area’s economy.
